Haiti
Protests in Haiti continue as supporters from the opposition and the government back calls for an end to the ongoing crisis in the carribean nation.
Among other demands, they are calling for elections to be held in the country with a new date for the presidential run-off set up.
Outgoing president Martelly is due to leave office on February 7 but has argued that he will only do so when a clear path succession is identified.
“What we are saying is that on the 7th of February, (President Michel) Martelly cannot remain in the country. We will take to the streets and demand that Martelly give us the keys on the 7th of February at noon.”
The run-off vote was postponed indefinitely after the main opposition candidate Jude Celestin refused to participate over alleged fraud that sparked anti-government protests and widespread violence.
A special mission from the Organisation of American States is expected in the country to find a solution to the political deadlock.
